Placer County health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2025, involving a Lincoln resident. The virus has also been detected in 5 dead birds and 129 mosquito samples since June.

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause serious illness in about 1 in 150 infected people. While many experience no symptoms or only mild effects, there is no cure for the disease—making prevention essential.

How Residents Can Protect Themselves:

  • Dump & Drain: Eliminate standing water in flowerpots, gutters, pet bowls, or unused pools.
  • DEET: Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535).
  • District: Contact Compton Creek Mosquito Abatememt District for support or to report neglected pools at (310) 933-5321.

Mosquitoes that spread WNV are most active at dawn and dusk. Officials urge residents to use repellent, wear protective clothing, and report dead birds to 1-877-WNV-BIRD or online at the state’s West Nile virus website.
