First Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported in Placer County This Summer

Placer County health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2025, involving a Lincoln resident. The virus has also been detected in 5 dead birds and 129 mosquito samples since June.
West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause serious illness in about 1 in 150 infected people. While many experience no symptoms or only mild effects, there is no cure for the disease—making prevention essential.
How Residents Can Protect Themselves:
- Dump & Drain: Eliminate standing water in flowerpots, gutters, pet bowls, or unused pools.
- DEET: Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535).
- District: Contact Compton Creek Mosquito Abatememt District for support or to report neglected pools at (310) 933-5321.
Mosquitoes that spread WNV are most active at dawn and dusk. Officials urge residents to use repellent, wear protective clothing, and report dead birds to 1-877-WNV-BIRD or online at the state’s West Nile virus website.
