Mosquito Control Awareness Week Kicks Off in Shasta County

National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (June 15–21) is underway, and Shasta County’s vector control team is calling on residents to take action against mosquito-borne disease.

Last year, California saw 131 cases of West Nile virus and 711 dengue cases—18 of which were locally transmitted. One fatality occurred in Shasta County. This year, officials are encouraging community vigilance, highlighting tools like mosquitofish for natural control and promoting the “4 Ds” of prevention:

  • Drain standing water from containers, tires, and gutters
  • Defend with EPA-approved repellent
  • Dusk/Dawn: limit exposure during peak mosquito activity
  • Dress in long sleeves and pants

Los Angeles County residents can also benefit from these tips. With rising temperatures and urban density, proactive measures are key to preventing mosquito outbreaks.
